Just a Fish in the Sea

Hello. TGIF, right? It has been an emotional roller coaster week for my family and I. We finally received and accepted an offer on our house. I have been kicked out of my home more times than I can count in the last 3 months, sometimes till 9 pm. We had reduced once, and were considering again. If you have sold before, you know the anxiety that comes with listing and selling your home. But the good news is we have a conditional sale, conditions released next week, and possession June 29. Yup, less than a month away. It's not so bad, half of our belongings are in a storage unit in Saskatoon already. And I think we have one large load left. I am beyond excited to move and live with hubby again, and work on starting our lives in a new city. Here's to new adventures. Last night we looked at 53 houses online together. 53!!!! And narrowed it down to 6. Unfortunately our top 3 went sale pending the day before. Hubby did go look at the other 3, but the pictures were deceiving. lol. So, back to the drawing board. Bright side is, we're moving to the lake for the summer until we find a home. That gives me almost 3 months, and our realtor seems optimistic. I guess fingers crossed for now. To sum it up, I'm feeling like a fish in the sea

Hi Stella {our black cat}

A{my oldest daughter} and I came across these 2 fishies in our community thrift store. Prices were marked $4 each. Yikes! I think I could of bought these things new for that price. L insisted we get them for the cabin, and we could make them pretty. Upon paying, the kind lady looked at the price tag and my daughter, and told us $4 for both. L's eyes lit up, and a big smile creeped across her face. She knows, nothing is better than getting a deal. 

I took them in the back yard and gave them a coat of Rustoleum Spray Paint in Mat White. Easy make-over by this gal. Perfect. 

 My summer goal is to relax with the kids and make our cabin a home. Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful weekend.

Dark Ash and Dark Walnut Dresser

 Hello. Hope your having a wonderful day. I have a great piece to share today. I haven't done much work with mixing paint and wood tones. I love how it looks when others do them, but I'm a little more hesitant to do them myself. When I first brought this piece home, I thought is was going to be a nice navy blue.

Fortunately for me, I had second thoughts. I feel a masculine yet classic grey would do it more justice. Then looking at the line features, I thought " why not leave them dark stained? ". Worse case it doesn't look as I envisioned, and I paint them afterwards.

I was right!! I love the look. I used Behr paint in Ash Grey, also using my home-made chalk paint recipe. Cheap alternative, when I want custom colors. I used a sample pot from Home Depot {$5} and some Plaster of Paris {$5-and it makes appr. 30 batches}, you really can't go wrong with that price.

I did touch up the wood finish with a little of my favorite stain, Minwax Dark Walnut. The handles didn't take as well to the traditional stain, so I went with the gel stain instead. Worked like a charm. I finished it off with Varathane Water based polyurethane finish in clear satin. Durability at its best.

Succulent Terrarium How To

Hello. Hope your having a good start to your week. Today I'm scratching off another Pin from my Pinterest board (only 3,015 more to go). I love the look and aura these lovely mini gardens give off. I don't typically have much luck with traditional plants. Somewhere along the way, they always die. Always! I've done some research into these magical gardens, and the most common way to kill them is over watering. Yay! Shouldn't be a problem here.

Now, I'm not sure where you can buy succulents in your neck of the woods? But apparently in mine, You can only purchase them at greenhouses. I learnt this the long way, after stopping at a handful of box stores I thought would carry them. I guess they're more popular in the winter months. It ended up working in my best interest. I got to go to a very nice greenhouse just outside the city. They had a tropical area/room/building??? not sure what to call it? The lady in there was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. She even went in the back and pulled out a few more plants for E and I to pick through. She did recommend tropical soil and charcoal. I didn't care much for their charcoal, as it was quite coarse. And since my terrarium was small I went with the fish aquarium activated carbon/charcoal. I heard they work the same. I also stopped at the dollar store and grabbed 2 bags of stones. I scored my terrariums at the thrift store for $2 each. I thought that was a steal as Michaels was $40 for one. On our way home, we stopped at the school playground and stole borrowed some sand too.

Here's everything I used, except my activated carbon/charcoal pack. I just grabbed a pouch from the pet store and cut it open.

Love the mix that E picked. Nice and bright.

My youngest E, is so eager to help in all projects. Such a big help.

First, we placed our stones on the bowls. I did about 2 inches and sprinkled my activated carbon/charcoal on top. This is supposed to help with the smell and keeping the water from turning rank.

Next we layered our top soil, about an inch and a half. I read to use 2 inches, but I was topping mine with sand, so included it in the total top layer. I made a small hole with a spoon, and placed each plant in. Once the plant was placed, I carefully patted down the soil around the base. Because I had a wide mouth bowl, I was able to use just my fingers. After all the plants were in place safely, I spooned the sand around the plants. You can give a gentle shake to even out the sand in the bottom.

Lastly, E strategically placed some larger stones for decoration. She wanted to top it off with sparkles, but I told her not today. We may have to find a few figurines to place inside, to keep the plants company instead.

That's it. It took maybe 25 minutes to prepare. More time was put into collecting supplies. My advice to you, call ahead to the store to confirm they have a selection of succulents there, before you go.

DIY Bathtub Shelf Made Easy

Hello. I love Mondays. I always feel invigorated from the weekend and ready to tackle new projects. I started my week off with this super simple DIY Bathtub Shelf. This is a quick project, as in less than 20 minutes to make. That easy.

I had a couple 1x6's in my garage from my sign projects here and here. What better way to use up some left over lumber, than a simple shelf. I started by cutting one of the 1x6's in half, so each piece was 36 inches. When I measured across my tub, it was 35". Rather than make 2 cuts, I just added an inch. Next I cut my support pieces at 10"each.

I pre drilled by holes, so the wood wouldn't split. Seems to make sense to me.

Next I set to work staining. I like the tone of Minwax Dark Walnut. Such a nice deep and rich brown. I love how it brings warmth to any room.

That's it. I let it dry for 2 hours, and it was ready to use.

All ready for a soak tonight.

Lights are ready to be lit.
